NetSuite customization services
NetSuite customization that fits your process, not the other way round.
NetSuite out of the box is a general-purpose ERP. Your business isn't general purpose. We close that gap with custom records, scripted behaviour, and templates — quoted at a fixed price before any work begins.
What NetSuite customization actually covers
"Customization" gets used loosely. In NetSuite it spans two distinct kinds of work, and knowing which one you need changes the cost by an order of magnitude.
Configuration uses capability NetSuite already ships: custom fields, custom forms, custom records, saved searches, SuiteFlow workflows, and role permissions. No code. It survives upgrades cleanly and any competent administrator can maintain it.
Customization proper extends the platform beyond configuration using SuiteScript, the SuiteCloud Development Framework, and Advanced PDF/HTML templates. It can do essentially anything, and it carries a maintenance cost that configuration doesn't.
We push configuration as far as it will go before writing a line of code. Most quotes we deliver are smaller than the client expected because the answer turned out to be a workflow and two custom fields rather than a script.
Custom records and field architecture
When your data doesn't fit a standard NetSuite record, a custom record type gives it a proper home — with its own fields, forms, permissions, and relationships to transactions and entities. This is where most bad NetSuite accounts go wrong: data gets stuffed into free-text memo fields because nobody modelled it properly, and three years later nobody can report on it.
Custom forms and user interface
Entry forms tuned per role and per transaction type, so a sales rep sees eleven fields instead of ninety. Field-level sourcing and defaults, conditional display through client scripts, and inline validation that stops bad data at entry rather than at month-end close.
SuiteFlow workflows and approval routing
Multi-step approvals with conditional routing by amount, department, subsidiary, or custom criteria. Workflows handle a surprising amount of what people assume needs scripting, and they're visible and editable by your team afterwards — which matters more than it sounds when your consultant is unavailable.
Advanced PDF/HTML templates
Invoices, sales orders, packing slips, statements, and purchase orders that look like your brand rather than a 2009 default. Advanced PDF templates use FreeMarker, which handles conditional sections, line-level grouping, multi-currency formatting, and localised date formats — all of which are fiddly enough that most people give up and live with the default. We do a lot of these.
Scripted customization
Where configuration stops, SuiteScript starts: calculated fields that depend on other records, automated record creation, external system calls, high-volume batch processing, and custom pages built as Suitelets. See the SuiteScript page for detail on script types and when each applies.
How a customization project runs
Four stages, and you can stop after the first one at no cost.
- Scoping call. You describe the problem. We ask about the process around it, not just the feature request — the request is often a symptom. Free.
- Fixed-price quote. A written scope, a price, and a delivery date. The price does not move unless you change the scope in writing.
- Build in sandbox. Everything is developed and tested in your sandbox account. You get a walkthrough and as much testing time as you want. We don't chase you for sign-off.
- Deploy to production. Bundled or deployed via SDF, with documentation for whoever maintains it next. Bugs found afterwards are fixed at no charge.
When customization is the wrong answer
We turn work down. The common cases:
- The process itself is the problem. Automating a broken approval chain makes it permanent. Sometimes the right advice is to adopt NetSuite's standard flow and spend the budget on training instead.
- A SuiteApp already does it. If a supported bundle solves your problem for less than we'd charge to build it, we'll say so.
- It's a reporting problem wearing a customization costume. A lot of "we need a custom record" requests are answered by a saved search and a dashboard portlet.
Frequently asked
How long does a NetSuite customization take?
A single scripted field behaviour or a PDF template revision is usually days. A custom approval process across several record types is two to four weeks including sandbox testing. A full order-to-cash redesign is longer. You get a date alongside the quote.
Will customizations survive a NetSuite upgrade?
Code written against documented SuiteScript APIs generally survives the twice-yearly releases. What breaks is code that leans on undocumented behaviour or on the shape of the UI. For managed-service clients we test against the Release Preview account before each upgrade goes live.
Can you customize a NetSuite account someone else built?
Yes, and it usually starts with an assessment rather than the change you asked for — inherited accounts tend to have more deployed-and-forgotten scripts than active ones, and it's worth knowing what's actually running before adding to it.
Do you work in sandbox or production?
Sandbox for development and testing, always. Production only for deployment, and only once you've tested. If you don't have a sandbox we'll tell you whether the work justifies getting one.
